TASK 1: VORMATOR CHALLENGE

1. LECTURE & TUTORIAL

WEEK 1 (25/09/2024)
LECTURE:
Character Design Basic:
Stylized Design: Iconic, Simplicity & Unique

Principles of Character Design:

Shapes:
Different shapes give different vibes and weight (Square: strong, stable// Circle: cute, soft)
Color:
Different colors give impressions of different emotion (Blue: sad, cold// Yellow: bright, happy)
Emphasis, contrast:
Let the character stand out (eg: Using blue and yellow to let the color pop)

Every elements should complement each other
Expressions, poses:
Clear visualization of your characters behaviors, quirks etc make it easier to appeal to your viewers

TUTORIAL:
Mr. Hafiz posted some lecture videos and resources on our Google Classroom.

By watching the video we get to learn:

  • How to make shape in Illustrator
  • How to use all kinds of tool ( The pen tool, Curvature, Pathfinder and etc)

This is my tracing practice after watching the Youtube videos:

The tentacle was the hardest one to make, it contains a lot of curves, it take some time to make it perfect and detailed.

WEEK 2 (02/10/2024)
LECTURE:
Chiaroscuro:
The use of light and dark to create the illusion of three dimensional volume on a flat surface
-Using purpose:
Use color or light contrast to increase the scene's dramatic tension (Create emotional and impactful scenes)
Focus point or subject of a scene is brightly colored

Low-key Lighting ( Contrasted with dark background)

-Use in Visual Narrative:

Increase drama tension

Create sensational effect

Attract attention: We get to focus on the main point

Tasteful Composition: Create attractive scenes

TUTORIAL:
In this week's practical class Mr Hafiz demonstrated how to draw shapes and use the tools. He introduced us to a game (The Bézier Game). It help us to practice and get familiar with the pen tool.

PRESS ME TO The Bézier Game

I found some reference photos and draw a brief sketch for my Vormator. After that, I started to combine the shapes in Illustrator.

It is kind of fun to combine these shapes, it has a lot of possibilities. When combining and creating new elements and shapes, it is kind of challenging for me, since we need lots of creativity and think outside the box.

WEEK 3 (09/10/2024)
LECTURE:
COMPOSITION THEORY 1: VISUAL TYPES & SHOT:

Basic composition visual rules:

Visual Narrative

Visual Flow: Our eyes will follow the water to the character

Visual Balance: The front character and the characters that are sitting create a balance

Visual Hierarchy

Different types of shots:

Establishing: Let the audience take a chance to take in all the splendor and grandeur of a location

Bird's eye view: Overhead shot

Frame within a frame: Using the elements from the scene to create a frame

Medium shot

Close-up: Catch the emotions from the character

Worm's eye view:

TUTORIAL:
In this week's practical class, Mr Hafiz introduced "Pathfinder" and "Shapebuilder".

HOW TO USE PATHFINDER <<Video provided by MR HAFIZ

Pathfinder and Shapebuilder are useful when creating silhouette for the Vormator, it creates new shapes easily, especially making shadows.

It is kind of tricky when I first use it, but it is extremely useful after some practice.

3. WORKING PROCESS

Mood board:

Sketch:
This is my first brief sketch of my Vormator. My idea is to create a cute monster. I really like Yeti so I use it as a reference for my Vormator. I added some fun elements such as a water bottle, a pair of glasses and ice skate.

Rationale:
As I mentioned in my sketch, my main idea is to create a cute, nerdy monster. Monsters often exhibit a scary, terrifying side in stories or fantasy, but I wanted to break that stereotype. Therefore, my monster is a cute little creature with glasses. Although she has claws and a horn, I incorporated round elements on her shoulders and body to soften her appearance and make her seem more harmless.

To create an icy yeti vibe, I have decided the main theme colors for my Vormator are green and blue.
For the name,  I will name my Vormator 'Minty'! Since the color is similar to mint and mint feels icy and cool.

Outline and Colored:

This is the first version of my Vormator. At first it was kind of empty, so I added the earring and some details on the arm and horn. I gave up the bootle element since it did not fit the Vormator. To give it a nerdy look, I keep the glasses and the cute eyebrows.

Since we were limited to three colors, I gave up the white and yellow and used mint instead.
This is my final version of Minty!

4. FINAL OUTCOMES

5. SELF REFLECTION

When creating Minty I think the most challenging part is creativity. I think Minty is not that unique since it has a main theme which is Yeti and it is not completely original, the only thing that I can do is add some new elements. Through this task, I found out my weakness and I am going to work on it and try to be more creative in the future project.
