2. LECTURES
1. Culture & Design

INTRODUCTION
Visuals are powerful persuasive medium to provide most of our information about the world
*Reason: We live in a visual information culture

A comparison between TEXT & VISUAL:
1. In our brain visual process 60000 faster than text
2. About 90% of information transmitted to our brain is visual
3. 40% of people responds to visual compare to text

WHAT IS VISUAL?
1. Everything that can be seen: Basically everything, including nature
*But nature is not culture, unless there's a meaning
Eg: Tree is from nature, but if it has a meaning & representation in it. It's visual.

2. Everything created/produced by humans that can be seen: Humans created with purpose

Eg: Tattoo. In the past, tailor's tattoo is about their stories. While Japanese tattoo is about conveying social status and about devotion.

ATTENTION!!!!
*As a designers, we need to be aware of cultural nuances, symbolism and context to create designs that are inclusive and resonate with diverse audiences.
BE RESPECTFUL, DO RESEARCH BEFORE DESIGNING

DESIGN SIGNIFICANCE
DESIGN SYSTEM
1. Basic Assumptions: Cultural Functions
*Valus, Principles, Practices

2. Norms & Values: Design Language
*Look & Feel, Design Elements, Design Functions

3. Artifacts & Products: Implementations
*Tools, Technology

Cultural Sensitivity > Aesthetics

DESIGN SENSITIVITY
Cultural Sensitivity Awareness:
1. Symbolism And Imagery:
Symbols and images in different culture might have different meaning
*Avoid misunderstanding

2. Typography & Language:
Make sure the fonts or text style are culturally appropriate. Using accurate translations and considering language variations are important too.
*To reach diverse audiences

3. Color Considerations:
Similar to the first point, colors in different culture have different meaning.
*Avoid offense

Addressing Cultural Sensitivity:
1. Inclusive Design:
Creating product that are accessible from different culture, abilities and need

2. Localization:
Adapting designs to specific cultural contexts through localization
*Enhance the relevance and acceptance of the product and services

3. User Research:
Gaining insight into cultural behaviors and preferences by doing ethnography study and user testing across diverse groups

4. Cultural Awareness Training:
Having a deeper understanding about different culture might benefit designers

3. PROJECT 1
1. Ideation
We throw out several ideation, here are our brief ideas

1. IDEA: by Ng Jia Xuan (me)
Inspired by Chinese New Year culture and 谐音梗
(I’m not sure about the English I think it’s WORDPLAY)

We often use idioms that means good luck (or other good meaning) as a blessing before getting angpao
OR
Our dishes with special names (most of them include blessing)
Eg: 喜气洋洋(Meaning happy in Mandarin)  洋 as羊 (Sheep)

Design:

Using this wordplay to create various pattern
(Using English as reference will be like: Eg: Cute-cumber)
To create various merch  Rug, handkerchief etc

2. IDEA: by Phang Ann
Inspired by colored pencils/pens , colored pencils have a variety of colors to choose from, and its easy to hold with its physical properties, use and keep.

Credit: https://images.app.goo.gl/4zgELuFuWZze8HiUA
Design:
We can design a set of makeup using the physical properties of colored pencils.
Etc: a set of makeups (concealer, eyeshadow, lipstick, eyebrow pencil, lip balm, highlighter, blush...) that figured like color pencils. We could also provide like a color pencil case kind of concept for storage

This could solve issues like having to bring a big makeup bag to touchup since some makeups come in various size and shapes. Its also a travel friendly choice to bring around, since its easier to keep and store.

3. IDEA: by Low Guang Yan
Inspired by everyone’s first impression as a joke of Sabah and Sarawak. (Ride crocodile everywhere and use crocodile as their public transportation )

Credit: Drawn by our teammate

Design:
Mascot / figurine / memes / toys / representative item for Sabah Sarawak

Most of the foreigners thought people at Sabah and Sarawak ride Crocodile and live on trees. With this, we can use it as a joke and let them know that our country are not that fall behind.

IDEA 2 WAS CHOSEN!!!
We change the colors pencil concept to building blocks which is LEGO.

We started to work on the proposal and design.

We divided into 3 groups to work on the preliminary ideas, I am in Group 1 and our design is focusing on making a makeup kit

We have 2 peoples in this grp, we both draw a brief sketch:

Sketch 1 by Ng Jia Xuan (me)
Sketch 2 by Tee Zi Tong

After briefing with Zi Tong, we chose sketch 2 as our design

Our proposal slides with Rationale, Preliminary Design and References etc.

4. PROJECT 2
In this task, we started doing our data collection.

Phang Ann(our leader) propose some research method. After discussing, we decided to work on
survey, interview & online research.

OUR DATA COLLECTION WILL FOCUS ON THIS INFORMATION:

Functional culture which relates to our objectives:

-Customizable

-Interlocking functions (attach and disassemble)

-Unisex appeal

-What kind of daily essentials they prefer

SURVEY:
Prepare by Phang Ann, Ng Jia Xuan, Tan Ying Xuan & Tee Zi Tong

We use Google Forms as our source for the survey:
Our objective is to categorize our participants into different categories; this will make it easier for us to compile the requirements from different participants.

👉🏻People who love to collect makeup with special packaging/love collection

👉🏻People who like legos

👉🏻People who think is practical

Questionnaire:

1. What daily essentials do you use most often when going out?
2. If there is a product that combines all your daily essentials, will you purchase it? (Yes/No)
3. Why or why not?
4. What is most important when you decide to buy a product?
(Packaging/ Functionality/ Convenience/ Other)
5. Do you enjoy building with Legos? (Yes/No)
6. What are the key features that come to mind when you think of Legos?
(Customizable/ Interlocking functions (Attach and disassemble)/ Aesthetic appeal/ Others)
7. Do you believe Legos are for everyone, regardless of gender? (Yes/No)
8. Would you buy a product that contains your daily essentials and is easy to grab and go, or hang on your bag? (Yes/No)
9. Would you be interested in buying a LEGO-incorporated daily essentials product? (Yes/No)
10. If you had the chance to buy our product, what would be the main reason?

(Special packaging / Love for LEGO / Practical & Convenient / Others)

THE PROGRESS OF ME PREPARING MY OWN SLIDE:
Survey Analysis Slide:
Analyze the data. I focused on marketing and product potential.

Secondary data collection (Extra online research):
I focus on finding surveys and essays/posts about how people perceive mini-sized products, since one of our features is being small and lightweight.

5. FINAL PROJECT
For the final project which is filming Tik Tok Videos.

This are some of the ideas that our group has decided:

I will work on the 4th idea

SOME SUGGESTION ABOUT THE 4TH VID IDEA:
JIA XUAN: POV: The friend that has everything in her bag.

IVORY⁩: Make a whats in my bag type of video 😜( One of the girl have a lots of things in her bag while the other one only have the legos (our product) and is more fashionable)

PHANG ANN: The lego girl bag charm is shining super brightly (edit using effects). And we cant see what is it because it's so bright, then when we zoom in, we can add our product which is digitally edited into the video. In this way we don't need to make the products in real life.

A BRIEF SCRIPTS THAT I WRITE:
Do a comparison vid the one who is filming ask both of them smth to borrow

1st girl: Yeah I have (keep digging) wait a minute yeah (still keep digging) just a sec (pour out everything on the table)

2nd girl: The one who is filming constantly ask her
Eg: Do you have brush? Do you have lipstick? Etc
And she can give her immediately

(For the editing: while the first is still digging the sec already give her the item.)

The brief script can be:
(Both of them are not in the same frame)
Context: The filming person ask for smth
1st: Sure! (Start to dig)
2nd: Sure! (Give out immediately)
1st: Wait a min yeah (Still digging)
2nd: (Asked for another item) Yep I have (Give out immediately)
1st: Just a sec yeah (pour out her bag)
2nd: You need to touch up? Here you go (Give out immediately)

The next scene will be both of them sitting together the first asking why is your bag so neat and we can film both of their bag just like Ivory suggested and using Phang Ann editing suggestion

And the sec girl can start explaining ahh I use this product it’s cute and convenient blablabla

A brief storyboard that I draw

SCRIPT VER 2:
If I use the whole script, the video will be too long. Here are the script after some adjustment:
(Both of them are not in the same frame)
Context: The filming person ask for smth
Both: Sure!
1st: Pour everything out
2nd: Give out immediately

(For editing: After they did the action, I will stop on a moment and add white border & hashtag)
Transition to ANIMATION: Talking about the product

PROCESS OF THE VIDEO MAKING:
First I film the girls part (Yes I act both of them haha)
Next I work on the animation and add LetsGo! (the name of our product) in the animation
(Credit to Phang Ann & Low Guang Yan, they photoshop out our product!!)

Animation making in Procreate

Animation making time lapse

Video editing in Cap Cut

6. REFLECTION
Experience:
From this module, I have learned a lot of new things!

First, I had never learned about design systems before. Before designing anything, we must consider and plan so much! I had never thought about it before, so it was quite fresh and new for me.

Next is creating a product and brand. I am not a very creative person, so at first, I struggled a lot when thinking, "How and why should I create a product?" However, after that, the sketching, data collection, and creating the TikTok video went quite smoothly. I really enjoyed the process! I am not usually a fan of group projects, but I now understand the power of teamwork haha. When I ran out of ideas, my teammates had my back, and my leader was really reliable too!

In conclusion, I am happy that I have gained new knowledge and experience through this module!

Observation & Findings:
While collecting data, I discovered that convenience and practicality are quite important when creating an essential product. Most of our survey participants chose convenience and practicality as key factors when making a purchase.

As for cosmetics, I am actually a fan of miniature sized products haha! I was surprised to find that many consumers also prefer this size.
