2. LECTURES
Introduction:
Elements & Principles of Design
ELEMENTS of Design:
1. Point: The first, simplest element. When the amount
increase=form a line, shape
2. Lines: Different variation create different vibes
Eg: Curvy line create motion
3. Shape: When line link with each others create shape
*2 General Category:
1. Geometric: Precise & Regular
2. Organic: Not usual, more free
4. Form:
5. Texture: Tactile quality of the object
*2 Category:
1. Actual: Experienced by touching it
2. Simulated/Implied: Created to look like a real texture
6. Space:
7. Color:

PRINCIPLES of Design:
1. Contrast
2. Balance
3. Emphasis
4. Rules of Third
5. Repetition/Pattern/Rhythm
6. Movement
7. Hierarchy
8. Alignment
9. Harmony
10. Unity
11. Proportion
Topic 1: Contrast & Gestalt Theory
CONTRAST:

Putting both completely different elements together, making the scene pop
and more interesting
GESTALT THEORY:

1. Principle of SIMILARITY
: In our subconscious, we tend to categorize and group similar elements
(eg: shape)
![]() |
| Credit artwork: https://pin.it/4Fh6milkU |
2. Principle of CONTINUATION
: Our eyes will follow the flow (eg: Left to right) of the design (It
can be created by lines, curves etc)

| Credit artwork: https://images.app.goo.gl/M766TJwMbitify2v7 |
3. Principle of CLOSURE
: Our eyes will complete the shape even though it is not
link/perfect

4. Principle of PROXIMITY
: Putting related elements together and create it's own
section
![]() |
| Credit artwork: https://pin.it/2HzgcY9Cg |
: We get to see two different elements when analyze the image
(One is either at the background/foreground, the other one is the main
object)
: Items that are symmetrical are likely to be unified as a group
Topic 2: Balance & Emphasis
BALANCE:
|
1. Symmetrical Balance
: Equal weight on both side (Left & right, Up & down)
*Radial Balance: Surrounding the central point with elements
equally
*Approximate Symmetry: Having the same weight on both side but not in
the same arrangement

2. Asymmetrical Balance
: Unequal weight on both side (Left & right, Up & down)
One side will be more 'heavy' (Focus point), the other side will be
more 'light'
*More dynamic, more fun

3. The Golden Ratio
: AKA phi, representative of perfect beauty

4. Rule of Thirds
: Equally divides image into three box, horizontally and vertically
EMPHASIS:

|
Creating a focus point in composition by using color, shape, value
etc
Topic 3: Repetition & Movement
REPETITION:

| Credit: Artwork: https://pin.it/1tKdQAaJ3
|
Constantly repeat= Create a rhythm & pattern
*A slight change/variety can avoid monotony
MOVEMENT:
Create a flow/motion that leads our eyes to view the whole
design/composition
*Using shape, lines, curve etc
HIERARCHY:
Navigate the viewers to the most important point/information
ALIGNMNET:
Placing elements in a way that edges line up along common rows or
columns
*Importance: Leading a viewer through the design
Topic 4: Harmony & Unity
UNITY & HARMONY:
1. UNITY
: Using the same (color, shapes, material etc) elements to create a sense of sameness/theme
2. HARMONY
: The sense of making the composition look nice by combining different
elements that fit together
(Same theme, aesthetic, mood etc)
*Adding variety to avoid monotony
SCALE & PROPORTION:
1. SCALE
:Size of one object in relation to the other object
*Can be divided into 2 groups:
1. Actual measurement
2. Visual estimates based on comparison
*Adding a bit of adjustment/changes can create a more interesting or
dramatic composition
Eg: Draw an egg that is bigger than a house
2. PROPORTION
:The relationship of two or more elements in a design (Comparing their
size, ratio etc)
Eg: In a poster, the focus point/element will be bigger compare to other
elements
Topic 5: Symbol, Word & Image
SYMBOL:
|
A sign, shape or object to represent something, they have the
ability to convey message/information
*Figurative Representations > Graphic Symbols:
1. Pictorial Symbols: Simple pictures/image
2. Abstract Symbols: Easy and lesser detail, but look like the
object that they represent
3. Arbitrary Symbols: Looks nothing like the object, but we have to
learn it
*Based on geometric shapes & colors
WORD & IMAGE:
|
1. WORD
: By choosing the correct text & typography, words are able to
deepen the meaning of the design
2. IMAGE
: By selecting relevant images, they can guide viewers to connect with the
concept or brand
3. SELECTED DESIGN & EXPLANATION

Q: Why do I choose this art work?
A: There are a few reasons why I chose this artwork:
1. This artist is actually a senior from my high school, and he is someone I really look up to. When I get the opportunity to analyze a drawing, he is the first person who comes to mind!
2. In my opinion, the most prominent element he uses is lighting and shadow, which is also the element I’m most interested in. Hence, I think this is the perfect opportunity for me to analyze the technique he uses in this poster.
3. I am interested in analyzing the colors and composition of this poster. The colors of this poster are quite straightforward, which are black, red and yellow, but the composition is not plain at all. On the other hand, I think this composition is quite dynamic, creating contrast between the foreground, mideground, and background to highlight the main focus.
In conclusion, I am very interested in this artwork, especially the usage of light and shadow. Hence, I would like to analyze this piece!
BRIEF OBSERVATION:
Design Principles in this composition:
1. Balance: Using the Rule of Third, the main object is at the top three slot (From left to right) , while the others are at the bottom three slots (From left to right)
2. Contrast & Emphasis: The background is lighter than the main object (The floating man). Our eyes will focus on him naturally.
4. FEEDBACK
WEEK 2:
Notes drawn by yourself is nice, easy to understand what have you
learned. Keep going.
WEEK 3:
Sir suggests using graphic design rather than fine art on the Task 2. Fine art might be more difficult than graphic design when we need to analyze and recreate an artwork.

Dear Xuan: Well done. Please update with explanation of Gestalt Theory.
ReplyDeleteOkay sir!! Thank you so much for the feedback
