LECTURE 5 (WEEK 5):

Perception:

CONTRAST: Create distinction & difference, it will be easier to separate different information

7 kinds or contrast posits by Carl Dair:

Fig 1.1: Carl Dair's 7 Typographical Contrasts , Week 5 (26/05/25)

1. Size

2. Weight: Bold>>Light

3. Contrast of form

4. Contrast of structure

5. Contrast of texture

6. Contrast of color

7. Contrast of direction

FORM: Really IMPORTANT, it creates the most visual impact it attract audience eyes

Organization:

Gestalt Theory: Emphasizes that the whole of anything is greater than it's part

*In design we must look at the whole so you can analyze, how do these elements relate, how they flow etc.

3. TASK 2A

3.1 Research and Exploration

Fig 3.1: Mind map about me, Week 4 (17/05/25)

#1st Ideation

According to my map, I decided to use my personality as my main elements:

-Introverted, shy
My idea is my name hiding behind each other and peek out.

Fig 3.2: 1st Ideation Reference, Week 4 (17/05/25)

Fig 3.3: 1st Ideation Sketch, Week 4 (17/05/25)

Fig 3.4: 1st Ideation Refinement, Week 4 (17/05/25)

#2nd Ideation

According to my map, I decided to use "Youngest Girl" as my main element:

-Youngest girl in my family

My idea is adding "flower" element in my word design, as in Chinese term, we will use flower to describe a girl.

Fig 3.5: 2nd Ideation Reference, Week 4 (17/05/25)

Fig 3.6: 2nd Ideation Sketch, Week 4 (17/05/25)

Fig 3.7: 2nd Ideation Refinement, Week 4 (17/05/25)

Both of my ideation concepts are too simple and lack depth. Mr. Vinod suggested that I explore further. I completely agree, as after the consultation, I also realized this is a problem. I'm not satisfied with either of my designs, so I’ve decided to think and explore further.

#3rd Ideation

According to my map, I decided to use my personality as my main elements:

Reassuring:

My friends often say it's easy to open their hearts to me and that they feel comfortable sharing their worries with me.

In Chinese we will say 敞開心门 as "open their hearts".

敞開: Open

心: Heart

门: Door

So I decided to put in a door elements in my word play.

Ideation

My name flows smoothly out of the door

Explanation:

Door: I will always build a door for you, so you can let your worries out comfortably.

Flows smoothly out: Let your worries flow out smoothly.

*To make the words feel smoother, I chose a curvier and bolder typeface to represent the idea of smooth.

Fig 3.10: 3rd Ideation Sketch, Week 5 (22/05/25)

Fig 3.11: 3rd Ideation Refinement, Week 5 (23/05/25)

At first, I tried to make the ends of the strokes fully rounded, but it looked a bit chaotic to me. So, I changed them to a more rounded-square shape instead.

I also adjusted the flow between the letters "u" and "n" to make the transition smoother and better connected.

Fig 3.11: 3rd Ideation Attempt 1 & 2, Week 5 (23/05/25)

I am having a dilemma of having a stoke as the door knob or a circle, but in the end I choose the circle version.

Fig 3.12: 3rd Ideation Attempt 2, Week 5 (23/05/25)

Fig 3.13: 3rd Ideation Attempt 3, Week 6 (30/05/25)

According to Mr Vinod's suggestion, I have made some adjustments to the letter "A" so it won't pop out that much. I adjusted the stroke so the weight is more even and adjusted the size of the "n" to make it more balanced and even with the "x."

3.2 Coloring

Fig 3.2.1: Color Palette, Week 6 (30/05/25)

We are required to choose a color palette for our word mark.

3.3 Animation Making

Fig 4.1.1: Brief sketch for animation, Week 7 (02/06/25)

For the animation, I decided to focus on the 'door' element, making the word flow out through the door. Bringing back my keyword "Reassuring".
"I will always build a door for you, so you can let your worries out comfortably."

#1st Ideation
First, I tried the first ideation and added an opening door at the beginning. However, the effect wasn’t as good as I expected, so I decided to move on to the second ideation right away.

#2nd Ideation

Fig 4.1.2: Animation making progress in After Effect, Week 7 (02/06/25)

Fig 4.1.3: First attempt for Ideation #2, Week 7 (02/06/25)

At first, I made it like my sketch, but then I felt that having only one row looked a bit empty, so I added two more rows to fill the space.

4. TASK 2B

4.1 Collateral Making

First, I search some mockup from the website Mr Mockup & Mockupbee.
I decided to work on:

#1 Beanie

I’m using the 'door' in my wordmark as a signature icon for my brand, so I’ve added it to the bottom right of the beanie. It gives the beanie a simple yet stylish touch.

For the color, I chose a more iconic contrasting combination: yellow & blue.

Fig 4.1.4: Collateral #1 Beanie Mockup, Week 7 (02/06/25)

#2 Phone Case

For the phone cases, I was thinking of making two designs: one with a more complex pattern, and the other with a simple illustrated image.

Fig 4.1.5: Phone Cases Mockup from Mockupbee, Week 7 (03/06/25)

Fig 4.1.6: Phone Cases design progress in Illustrator, Week 7 (03/06/25)

Fig 4.1.7: Phone Case Mockup progress in Photoshop, Week 7 (03/06/25)

Fig 4.1.8: Collateral #2 Phone Case Mockup, Week 7 (03/06/25)

Description for the 1st design (A repetition pattern of the door):
I use the door to create a repetitive pattern, and to make it more playful, I apply colors from my color palette to some of the doors, intentionally keeping the arrangement uneven.

Description for the 2nd design (The five doors with yellow light):
My idea is based on the concept "I will always build a door for you, so you can let your worries out comfortably." I want to continue using this concept, so I imagined a scenario where the door I build would be the easiest for you to notice which is a door illuminated by the softest & warmest light.

#3 Badge

For the badge, I used one of the designs from the phone case for one of the badges, while the other one features the word mark.

4.2 Instagram

#1 Instagram Pages Making

Fig 4.2.1: Instagram Pages Making progress in Illustrator, Week 7 (03/06/25)

For the 1st and 6th posts, I used both the pattern and illustration from my phone case collateral. The 3rd and 7th posts feature my wordmark in different colors. The 8th post showcases my color palette; to make it more interesting, I combined the door pattern with the color palette.

#2 Profile pic Making

Fig 4.2.4: Portrait Attempt #1, Week 8 (10/06/25)

After having a consultation with Mr Vinod, I adjusted my background of he poRtrait as it is a bit overwhelming & messy.

#3 Instagram Layout
Fig 4.2.6: Instagram overall layout Attempt #1, Week 8 (10/06/25)

Fig 4.2.7: Instagram overall layout Attempt #2, Week 8 (11/06/25)

Adjustment:
1. The 1st post: I change the color of the door to match my animation, now it's same with my animation.
2. My portrait pic: After consultation I reduce the elements at the background as it was a bit messy.

6. FEEDBACK

WEEK 5:

General Feedback:

Two ways: Commercially or A personal mark

Commercially:

1. Create a brand for professional use

2. Communicate with the audience

*Eg: Combine with food, they will think about food. It will be work in restaurant/food industry

Personal Mark:

1. Whatever you want, idgaf vibe

-The best word mark will look new, it’s timeless, whether it’s been 10 years 20 years etc

-An intellectual explanation is essential when presenting work to client.

Do more research for word mark, instead of individual word. To know more about the balance etc

-A way to check the balance: Put a box around the design, analyze the white and black area

-Create it before making rationale it’s a way

Specific Feedback:

-No negative word for your brand

-Methodical thinking when using a element

*For example flower: It can be a company that is flowering a business

-Jump of more, don’t be too basic. Can look in more

WEEK 6:

General Feedback:

-Weight: Remember to adjust the weight

Specific Feedback:

-The A part is too thick need some adjustment and it pop out too much make some adjustment to make it balance

-The x & n can be the same size so it’s more balance, and reduce the pop of the A

WEEK 7:

General Feedback:

Applying 90/10 method to branding: 90- Focus, 10- Experiment

Specific Feedback:

Looks good.

WEEK 8:

General feedback:

The color when you use for the element pattern same with your word mark it might be a distraction

For task 3:

-Search before doing it, some of the font already has a lot of creation (eg: Lego)

-Unicase letterform (Just uppercase no lowercase)

Specific feedback:

-For the portrait, the background is a bit too much going on

7. REFLECTION

Experience:
At first, my exploration wasn’t that deep, which caused me to miss out on a lot of potential when creating the word mark. But after exploring more, thinking it through, and adding meaning to each element and part of the design, I definitely prefer my current word mark compared to the previous sketches! (Might work on them in the future maybe? haha)

As for the animation part, I’m honestly not that good at using After Effects, it’s pretty complicated for me. But through this task, I managed to learn new techniques and apply them to my animation, and I’m quite satisfied with the result. It’s not a fancy, complex, or professional-level animation, but I did my best!!

Creating the collateral was really fun! I’ve never tried designing my own merch before, so it was exciting to get the opportunity. (I love the beanie, simple but stylish!)

Overall, it was a new and fun experience. Of course, the process wasn’t always smooth (I got stuck while making the word mark sketches and profile portrait).

Observations:
The current trend for merchandise such as clothes, hats, tote bags, and other items leans towards minimalistic designs. From my research, I’ve found that many brands prefer to place their logo on the front upper-right side of their clothing, with a large graphic or image on the back. For caps or hats, the designs are similar to the reference I found (Fig 4.2.1).

Findings:

When exploring word mark design, there are so many different ways to approach ideation—it could be through stroke, individual elements, or even actions. Some of the creative approaches I've seen are truly mind-blowing. For example, I once saw a puzzle-inspired word mark that used the puzzle pieces to create white space forming the letter "Z." It made me realize that since I don’t always naturally think outside the box, I should build a habit of exploring more good design works. By exposing myself to more creative ideas and elements, I can store them like a mental “source file,” helping me improve my sense of aesthetics and flexibility when creating my own designs.

*Personally, Tala guided me the most, so I wrote a brief description and notes about it.

-Every element and idea you use should have meaning and a specific purpose. Think and explore further before creating the pentagram, as it can help convey the message more effectively.
