2. PROGRESS
For this module, we are required to design a vehicle and project 1 will
be focussing on the exterior design.

Fig 2.1: Sketches Attempt
|
First, I have 5 initial sketches and I consult them with sir Kannan.
FIVE SKETCHES JUSTIFICATION:
1. Air ship: A vehicle that looks like a ship but can fly in the sky
(Refer steampunk airship)
2. Air Ship 2.0: Similar to the previous ideation, but in a fun
shape (Refer to seahorse and include a bigger wings)
3. Air Land Vehicle: A vehicle that can be used in both air & land,
when the roof spread out it can be a wing: when the roof is closed it is a
car.
4. Newspaper boy vehicle: A tricycle for newspaper boy (Refer to the shape
of a newpaper boy hat)
5. Sleight: A sleight that is used in the winter (Refer to winter elements
such as snow globe)
Sir Kannan suggested me to execute the Air ship 2.0 &
Air Land Vehicle
After consultation, I decided to explore
and focus on Air Land Vehicle.

Fig 2.3: Silhouette Attempt
|
After some silhouette attempts (1-6), I found that it is quite impossible
to include wings on a land vehicle (I am concerned about the practicality
and usability).
Based on my world setting, the people in that world need an air land
vehicle to travel freely, as they live in different kingdoms surrounded by
forests. A vehicle that can both fly and drive on land would be more
efficient and flexible.
The biggest feature of this vehicle is its flexibility in adjusting
height. Focusing on this feature, I came up with another solution: a land
vehicle that can adjust its height using extension pipes (7-9). So, I gave
up the wings and focused on the extension pipes to replicate this key
feature.

After decided to focus on this design, I try to explore the shape
more.
LINE ART & 3D:

|
After securing a specific design, I start to draw the line art & try to
draw in perspective (It's not that good...). Besides line art, I also draw
and write some breakdown about my vehicle (Talking about the placement of
the equipment, the usability, mechanical components etc)

After consulting with Sir Kannan, he suggested that I block out the vehicle
in 3D as a guide to draw it in correct and different perspectives. I refined
my design throughout the blocking process and consultations with Sir.

After blocking out the 3D and use that as a guide, I draw out the line
art and add more details to it (Such as couch, doors & window, pipes
etc)
Sir Kannan give me some suggestion to improve my vehicle (The Red
Drawing)
1. The grille part can be pop out a bit to add more
dimension
2. Overall my vehicle is quite boxy & clean, you can add
different shape such as hood or more pipes!
3. The tyre can be more fun by adding more dimension (Such as
pushing some components in)
4. The side mirror can refer to a vintage car, play with the shape
and placement

Fig 2.15: Some Coloring Attempt

Besides line art, I also try to do some coloring attempt! I choose a color
combo that's giving vintage and posh vibe.

In the end, I decided to work on the green, red & gold combo and did
some material & shading attempt.

Character)

Based on my previous attempt, sir Kannan give me some suggestion to improve the appearance
1. To present the material, try different highlight for
example a touch of bright green will let the metal shines and pop
out
2. The shading on the couch can be refined
more, showing the wrinkles can make it more complete.
3. Be mindful on the shading of the vehicle, when it's too
dark we lost the details
4. FEEDBACK

5. REFLECTION
This task is so new to me. From the beginning (balancing bold ideation and practicality) until the final refinement (exterior and component refinement), it is a process that I hadn’t experienced before. Not gonna lie, I struggled for about 60% of the whole process TT, but I did learn a lot of things.
I learned to understand some vehicle components, practiced how to balance crazy ideas with usability, and even improved my drawing skills. It’s been a year since I started using digital art tools; before that, I had been using watercolor or other non-digital art tools for a long time.
Sir Kannan gave us a lot of useful suggestions, from how to draw to how we can polish our work and observe areas that can be improved. Thank you Sir for making this module more interesting, I learned SOOO many new techniques too!!
Overall, I did struggle and questioned myself, but I am also happy that I made progress and gained a new experience.
