In this project, we are required to film a 1minutes short film that contain at least one special effect. After receiving our topic, we start to make the story.
#1 Attempt
When we thought about special effects, it reminded us of a magic portal. So, we are planning to work on a magic student concept.
Xuan is a magic school student who struggles to perform a particular spell. She becomes frustrated after constantly failing. Suddenly, she gets an evil idea which is stealing other students' answer sheets and copy their spells. Just as she is about to go through with it, a Hermit appears from a magic portal and tells Xuan not to go down the wrong path, reminding her that patience will lead to the right solution. Xuan then realizes that the correct spell was actually in a book right beside her. In the end, she finally succeeds.
Based on Mr. Martin’s feedback, he suggested that we either add more story to the Hermit character or remove the character entirely, as it currently doesn’t contribute much to the overall narrative.
#2 Attempt
We decided to get rid of the Hermit and work on another script which is written in our proposal.
WEEK 10
This week, we were required to test one of our special effects in class. We decided to work on the magic portal effect.

For this effect, we were required to record two videos: one for outside the portal and one for inside the portal. We found the portal effect on a website and removed the background using Keylight.

By using the mask tool, we placed the 'inside portal' footage within the portal and adjusted its size to make the portal appear as if it's expanding from small to big.

After preparing, we set up the set and start filming.

Our first special effect is a smoke 'poof.' When Xuan fails her trick, the cup will disappear in a puff of smoke. We download a smoke video with a green screen background and used the Keylight tool to remove it. Then, we adjusted the opacity, contrast, and other settings to make the smoke look more natural.

The second special effect is a magical aura that appears when Xuan attempts the trick. When she performs it correctly, the effect is golden, but when she uses black magic, the effect turns black. Similar to the previous effect, we used Keylight to remove the background. We also applied Gaussian Blur to make the effect look more natural and adjusted the colors to achieve the desired appearance.

The last special effect is a magic portal that Xuan encounters by the lakeside. The portal displays the correct spell and guides Xuan in using it. As in our previous test, we filmed two separate footages and used masking to combine them. We also adjusted the portal’s perspective to make it look more natural and believable.

4. FEEDBACK
WEEK 13
Overall is good, but it is a bit unclear because you guys did not state Xuan wants to change the cup to apple, maybe adding one more shot will be better. For the voice over, remove the riddle one, it's too much.
WEEK 14
Yeah it's good, it just the last subtitles is gone make sure to put it back.
This task is one of the most complicated ones. I mean, it is a final project, so of course it is heavier than the other tasks. Luckily, it is a group project. Otherwise, I’m not sure how I’m supposed to film it alone. This project is fun!! It compiles all of the techniques that we learned from the previous tasks. From pre-production, including script, finding reference, preparing the set, to shooting day and editing period, it is quite heavy for us. Writing a script is really not that easy, we fixed it a lot of times. Finding the right place to film is not easy (thank you, my room), and we spent a lot of time on editing too. Overall, it is a fun project even though it takes quite a lot of effort and time to finish it.
