FLIP CLASS:

WHAT IS INFOGRAPHIC:

In this task, we are required to form a group and finish a simple presentation slides that is about infographic.

Week 1 - What is Infographics by Yellow Group from Group B

REDESIGNED INFOGRAPHIC:

For this task, we are required to re-design a poorly constructed infographic poster.

First, I did some exploration in the internet and look for bad infographic poster that I can redesign. I found this poster on Pinterest and decided to redesign it.

Fig 1.1: Poster that I wanted to redesign

I would say it's not a BAD BAD poster as arts is really subjective, I like he aesthetic even the layout looks fun, but I do think the readability can be improved.

SUGGESTED ADJUSTMENT:
1. The flow of the infographic:
-Now the flow is not that smooth as the poster is quite organic I would say.
2. The amount of pictures/figure:
-It goes well with the aesthetic, but some of it is for design purpose instead of conveying the message.
3. Font size:
-Some of the text is unreadable due to the font size.
4. The amount of text:
-Poster is meant to convey message immediately but the amount of text makes it harder to understand the whole poster in a short time.

Based on the adjustment that I decided to apply, I started to the poster in Canva.

Fig 1.2: Re-designed infographic poster

In this redesign version, the flow of the poster is easier to visualize which is reading from the top to bottom. To prioritize readability, I change the font to a clean font and highlight the keywords with bold. Moreover, I summarize the content and change it to bullet form for better readability. Lastly, I use the same color scheme which is blue and the same aesthetic which is retro.

I will say it's not the best poster, comparing with the original poster mine is having abetter readability and flow, but the original poster is more fun and interesting.

WHAT IS L.A.T.C.H:

In this task, we are required to form a group and finish a simple presentation slides that is about L.A.T.C.H Principles.
Week 2 - L.A.T.C.H
by Yellow Group from Group B

3. EXERCISE 1

QUANTIFY & VISUALIZE DATA

For this task we are required to present the information that we collected into a chart/presentable layout.

PROGRESS:

First, I decided what object that I will be using, here are some of my ideation:

1. Clothes (Different in texture, patterns, colors)

2. Legos (Different in blocks, surface texture, colors)

In the end, I choose LEGO as my object.

Moving on, I categorize my legos into BLOCKS, COLORS, SURFACE TEXTURE and start to plan my layout.

Fig 2.1: Organized Lego

Fig 2.2: Infographic Layout Sketches

1. Houses: As lego is a building block, so I try to put "house" element in the layout

2. Road: I think using the jalan (road) to connect different places (the box that I categorize the legos) will be cute

3. Puzzle: Similar to lego, puzzle is an element that can be "build/put" together, some of the category is related, by using the "put together" feature, I think it's a great way to link the related category.

4. Lego: Since I am doing lego I think about using lego. Similar to puzzle, using lego is also a great way to link related category together.

LEGO (4)  IS CHOSEN AS THE FINAL LAYOUT

After all of the preparation, I start to form my infographic on the paper.

4. EXERCISE 2

L.A.T.C.H

For this task we are required to organize the information and present an infographic poster based on L.A.T.C.H principles.

PROGRESS:

First, I decided what Pokemon that I will be using and I start to plan out my island and placement for the content.

Fig 4.1: Reference Picture

Fig 4.2: L.A.T.C.H poster sketch

LOCATION: State the places that the pokemon will be

TIME: The evolution of the pokemon

CATEGORY: Categorize the pokemon based on their power element

HIERACHY: Power Ranking

Initially I was going to put power ranking, but I use different types of pokemon, power ranking might be hard to calculate as all of them have their own weakness and strength. So I decided to change the HIERARCHY to each pokemon's power evolution (From weak to strong) and I decided to add ALPHABET too.

*The difference between time and hierarchy is:

HIERARCHY: Power evolution (From weak to strong)

TIME: Growing evolution (From stage 1 to final stage)

After adjustment:

LOCATION: State the places that the pokemon will be

ALPHABET: Pokemon's power element (Types) names

TIME: Growing timeline

CATEGORY: Categorize the pokemon based on their power element

HIERACHY: Power evolution

5. FEEDBACK
EXERCISE 1:

1. Try to have more category

2. The layout can be more interesting instead of using blocky layout (such as table or square shape)

6. REFLECTION
EXPERIENCES

As a student that is not good at categorizing stuff, the first exercise was a bit tough for me. I am not really creative when it comes to mindmap or infographic so I try very hard to think of interesting layout. However in the end, I just stick with one principle, which is readability. Instead of fancy layout, I try to make my layout clear and easy to understand. For exercise 2, I think I j=enjoy this task more! I get to draw and explore different types of pokemon which is kind of fun (But I work on this task during Chinese New Year TT but I manage to finish it!)

OBSERVATIONS

When I was doing research, I found a lot of fun infographic (For example the infographic that I redesign), their design is actually fun and pretty, but some of them sacrifice the readability (I can still read it, but maybe not the first glance). Balancing fun and readability will be the ability that I need to learn and practice.

FINDINGS

Focus on readability, that is the core of infographic. Fun layout is a bonus, but make sure the infomation is well categorized and easy to understand.
