3. PROGRESS

For this task we are required to make an Infographic Poster based on a video in "Pasta Grannies". As it this will a continuous work (to Final Project), me & my teammate decided to choose the same recipe which is Lasagna (CLICK here to original video).

PRE-PRODUCTION:

Before proceed to designing, I look up the recipe from Pasta Grannies and notes that my teammate make to clarify the steps and ingredients.

Moving on, I start to find mood board and reference (Art style, color scheme etc) for better visualization. Sir suggest me and my teammate to go for a different art style, so I decided to choose vector art meanwhile my teammate when for realistic art.

Color Scheme:

Bright & vibrant. Personally, I think bright color give an exotic vibe, which remind me of foreign country and lasagna is from Italy (A foreign country for me).

Art Style:

Vector Art. Vector art style remind me of those foreign comics, classy & retro. I think it will suit well with am iconic foreign dishes.

Layout:

After exploring, I think using cards (similar to poster at the right) reminds me of those ordering card that they have in restaurant, also reminds me of ingredients memo when mom will stick on the fridge. So I decided to work on this ideation.

PROGRESS:

Fig 3.4: Sketch #1

SKETCH #1:
I briefly block out the content & panel:
1. Each panel represent each step
2. The circle beside the panel is for ingredients
3. The largest panel will be the final lasagna

Sir feedback:
1. For the combine panel, use different color for each layer (Refer to the color above, For example: Dough is Blue)

Fig 3.5: Sketch #2

SKETCH #2:
I decided to separate the combining & final lasagna into two different panels for better visualization.

Sir feedback:
1. Shift the final lasagna result to left might receive a better result & flow

After finalizing the placement, I start to draw the element. I draw in Procreate first and image trace in Illustration.

Fig 3.8: Poster Making Progress

After trying several attempt, I decided to shift my final lasagna to right instead of left, as I think I like this flow better. Besides that, I resize the brown panel (same with the blue, green & red panel) for consistency.

1. For the combine panel, use different color for each layer (Refer to the color above, For example: Dough is Blue).

5. REFLECTION
EXPERIENCES
For this task, I struggled a bit with the layout throughout the whole process. Balancing aesthetics and readability was kind of hard because a recipe includes a lot of information. Especially since it’s an infographic poster meant for teaching, the steps, ingredients, and timings all had to fit on the poster. We really had to be concise and careful when planning the layout. However, after deciding on the layout, the rest was quite fun, and I enjoyed it!

OBSERVATIONS
Blocking is such an important step before designing. It helps a lot when planning the placement and maintaining white space. Even small details, such as the smoke from the lasagna can affect the overall layout hierarchy.

FINDINGS
Colors matter!! Sir’s feedback about the colors was spot on. Colors are a very powerful tool when it comes to categorizing and conveying messages (and even more!). They help the audience receive the intended message at first glance, they link and “speak” information.
